The Rainbow Silence Heart Café
280 Bridge Road, opposite the Town Hall

I've been searching for months for a place that makes Chai Tea like the Rainbow Silence Heart Café does, and I'm delighted to say it serves the best Chai I have tasted in Melbourne. Their tea is based on a creamy milk base and is infused with a delicious blend of spices made fresh on site.

While they use the same spices each time you might notice a variation in the particular blend when you go back for a cup on another day. Look out for a runaway cardamom pod at the bottom of your mug.

The café is strictly vegetarian and also caters for vegan. It is open each week night for dinner bar Wednesday. The prices are reasonable. Servings generous and the food is appealing and healthy.

I recommend the nicely seasoned Dhal served with rice and raita and garnished with a sprinkling of coriander leaves. The Neatloaf (read meatloaf without the meat) is also worth a try. It has quite a light texture with hints of rosemary. Served with your choice of salads on the side, it makes a very filling meal. A quick scan of the menu and you're sure to find something that tickles your fancy. The DIY Nori Rolls and the Tofu Balls are very tempting.

It’s an interesting café. I must admit I hadn't tried it out until I had to meet some friends there. It's surprisingly quiet, and the corner of the café is comprised of huge windows, making it the perfect place for people watching. I will definitely be returning to feed my craving for the perfect cup of Chai.
