Pot of Gold
The Age, 30 November 2004

So there's a vegetarian coming to Christmas. Will you:

-curse; the usual response of the meat-eating majority at this time of year;

-give them a plate of roast vegetables (no goose fat please);

-ring up and order Tuscan-bean pate, cashew nut terrine and sticky-date Christmas pudding from The Rainbow-Silence-Heart?

Well, how could you resist a vegetarian eatery with a name like that? I half expected my order to be delivered by a peacenik in a poncho. But by the time I finished eating, I was converted on behalf of the vegetarians of Victoria. This is seriously good food. And while I’m loath to insult vegos by saying the terrine’s blend of nuts, eggs, cottage cheese, herbs and veg is good enough to please the carnivores, I would suggest it does have a role beyond a mere turkey substitute on December 25 – maybe for a light, healthy lunch on Boxing Day, with a salad of leaves and avocado. More, please.
